Thank you, Fr. Jerome!
February 12, 1958 - December 8, 2012
Father Jerome Young, OSB, died peacefully in the Lord early in the morning of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception after a long and arduous struggle with leukemia. His condition grew worse over the past several weeks, which only served to strengthen his resolve to be ready to meet the Lord. His brother monks as well as his two sisters, Marilyn and Beth, heaped loving care upon him during his final days.
Father Jerome made his first profession in 1982 and was ordained a priest by Archbishop Levada in 1986. He excelled in classical languages and theology and taught in the seminary where he won respect not only as a teacher but also as a spiritual director for many seminarians and non-seminarians. For many years he served as secretary to the Senior Council and the Chapter and was the Abbey Acquisitions Librarian and Library Board member. He also assisted in the formation of junior monks as Junior Master and member of the Formation Council.
Father Jerome gave exemplary example through his dedication and observance at the Opus Dei and the Eucharist. Some of Father’s unquestionable characteristics include a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother, love for classical and liturgical music, his gift as a pianist and organist, his skill with languages, and his witty sense of humor.
Father Jerome’s undaunted acceptance of his serious health challenges over the past ten years gave great witness both to his strong personal faith and to his monastic convictions. He will remain a blessing for many who knew him and will be greatly missed.
Father Jerome’s vigil service will be in the Abbey Church on Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM, December 12. His funeral will be on Thursday, December 13, at 10:00 AM. Let us pray that the angels may lead Father Jerome and all our departed Benedictine brothers and sisters into the presence of our Risen Lord as a fitting reward for their fidelity and witness among us.
